History of EGP/Marsco
Founded in 1947, Marsco first distinguished itself as world leader in specialized glass products for cutting-edge technology. The initial product lines focused heavily on customized dials and gauges. Then, with the advent of television, Marsco was among the first manufacturers to produce protective gray glass shields for TV tubes.

Adaptability became the cornerstone of Marsco’s early success. Its engineering and design team kept pace with the rapid scientific advances of the 1950s and 60s. New technologies created new niche markets, and Marsco was ready with innovative, customized product solutions. As old technologies became obsolete, Marsco never fell behind or became trapped into an outdated product line.

At the dawn of the 1970s, Marsco launched in a bold, new direction. Under the leadership of Alex Gurwood, Marsco engineers pioneered the use of heat-resistant coating for glass, especially in kitchen appliances. This technology was particularly useful in self-cleaning ovens, which were still brand new to the market. Forming partnerships with industry giants like General Electric, Marsco suddenly found its way into homes all across America for use in everyday applications.

Throughout the 1980s, Marsco was prospering on a global stage due to the strength of its domestic product lines. With a steady and established market position, however, technological research began to stagnate.

Everything changed in 1995, the year general manager Mike Hobbs engineered a management buyout of the company and quickly began to modernize the company’s corporate structure. With Hobbs came a more efficient, effective business model, as well as a new vision for the company’s future.

Hobbs began to strengthen Marsco’s position not just through growth and acquisition, but through the diversification of its technology. Hobbs refocused Marsco on research and scientific advancement. Pete Gerhardinger joined the company to lead its renewed engineering and design efforts. Fred Fowler signed on to direct internal operations as Marsco pursued its new mission.

As the new millennium began, Marsco engineers struck upon a revolutionary new technique to use coated glass as a uniform heating source. Hot Glass™ technology was born. Recognizing the nearly limitless applications of this emerging science, Mike Hobbs and his management team restructured the entire company to lead the world in technology their engineers discovered.

In 2004, Marsco transformed into Engineered Glass Products.

Under the EGP banner, the company is years ahead of any competition that may try to imitate the success of its new technology. EGP is poised to customize Hot Glass™ products and solutions for its business partners across a wide range of industries—architecture, food service, hotels, office furniture, and transportation.

To this day, the Marsco name remains a part of EGP, serving as the company’s manufacturing division, and the Marsco tradition of excellence will never be left behind.
