Engineered Glass Products & University of Toledo Earn $100,000 Grant

State of Ohio Honors University and Partners with Third Frontier Award

TOLEDO, Ohio (June 27, 2005) – Engineered Glass Products congratulates its research partner, the University of Toledo, for its 2005 Third Frontier Wright Project Award. The state of Ohio recently issued nine Third Frontier awards to public and private research centers that are promoting, creating, and expanding high-tech economic opportunities in the Buckeye State.

“Ohio’s future is in the hands of…those organizations that will unlock Ohio’s potential and turn concepts into reality, ultimately creating new companies and more jobs for Ohio citizens,” says Ohio Governor Bob Taft.

The state issued more than $10 million in Third Frontier grants to this year’s award winners. The University of Toledo will receive a $99,920 grant for its Center for Photovoltaic Electricity and Hydrogen (CPEH). EGP has been a proud partner of the CPEH since the University first announced plans to build it in 2003.

The CPEH focuses on developing systems that convert solar energy into non-polluting electricity and into hydrogen for fuel cells, which could transform northwest Ohio into a national leader in alternative energy. The project is a collaborative effort involving several different entities: the University, EGP, McMaster Energy Enterprises, Innovative Thin Films, Midwest Optoelectronics, BRP Manufacturing, First Solar and Pilkington Glass.

The Center could lead to the creation of more than 1,000 jobs. The governor’s Third Frontier Project has been vital to its continued growth. The CPEH was originally founded by a $2.1 million Third Frontier grant. This year’s grant will help pay for the installation and use of new equipment at the Center.

The Third Frontier Project is a 10-year, $1.1 billion program to expand the state’s high-tech research capabilities and promote start-up companies to create high-paying jobs. It is the state’s largest-ever technology-based economic development investment. More than $235 million in grant money has been awarded to Ohio-based companies, universities, and research organizations since the program began in 2002.
